The purpose of the CIC on Crew Wages and Seafarer Employment Agreement (MLC) is:

- To confirm that the SEAs and employment conditions are in conformity with the relevant provisions of MLC and the applicable requirements of the flag State;
- To confirm that seafarers serving on board receive payments in accordance with their SEA, collective bargaining agreements (CBA) and with the MLC, 2006;
- To confirm that the shipowners hold the appropriate instruments of financial security for compensation of seafarer death and long-term disability, as well as for repatriation of the seafarers; and
- To raise awareness of shipowners, operators and seafarers on the specific requirements that the CIC will address.
Port State Control Officers (PSCOs) will use a pre-defined questionnaire during the CIC. If deficiencies are found, actions by the Port State Control vary from the registered a deficiency and instructing the master to rectify it within a certain period of time to detaining the ship until the serious deficiencies have been rectified.
